CHAPTER 12: TRANSLATION GUIDE 147 Maulawi When this appears before a personal name as a title, it is to be included in the English translation. For example, one would say 'Maulawi Noor-ud-Deen'. If the words Maulawī sahib appear in direct speech, address- ing an individual in particular, it should be written as such. As an example, an acceptable English translation of the below would be: حضرت مسیح موعود علیہ السلام نے مولوی نور الدین صاحب کو دیکھتے ہی فرمایا:. مولوی صاحب ہم آپ کا ہی انتظار کر رہے تھے. As soon as the Promised Messiah, peace be on him, saw Maulawi Noor-ud-Deen, he said, 'Maulawi sahib, you are just the person I was looking for!' However, if maulawi is used in a generic sense, it is not capitalized: Yet alas! It never occurred to any maulawi that a prophecy had been fulfilled and a Sign in favour of Islam had been manifested.
