PT. 20 AL-'ANKABŪT CH. 29 قَالَ إِنَّ فِيهَا لُوطًا قَالُوا نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ He said, “But Lot is there. 33 بِمَنْ فِيهَا لَنُنَحِيَنَّهُ وَأَهْلَةَ إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ who is there. We will surely كَانَتْ مِنَ الْغَبِرِينَ They said, 'We know full well save him and his family, "except his wife, who is of those who remain behind. ” وَلَمَّا أَنْ جَاءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا And when Our messengers. 34 سِيءَ بِهِمُ وَ ضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرعًا وَقَالُوا and felt لَا تَخَفْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّا مُنَجُوكَ وَاَهْلَكَ إِلَّا امْرَأَتَكَ كَانَتْ مِن الْخَبِرِينَ came to Lot, he was distressed on their account powerless with regard to them. The road has been called (a road that still exists) in the Quran (15:77). The Dead Sea is also called the Bahr Lūt. 2962. Important Words: (he was distressed) is passive verb from sw. They say i. e. the affair grieved such a one; or did with him what he hated. means, he suspected him (Aqrab). (felt helpless on their account). means, it was or became narrow. They say i. e. he was incapable of replying. The expression as a means, his power or ability was straitened or was inadequate to it or he was unable to do or accomplish the thing or he lacked strength or ability or power to do the thing (Lane). Commentary: to the verse were, what their mission was and why their visit distressed and grieved Prophet Lot has been explained in 11:70-71 & 15:68-72. It is enough for the purpose of the verse under comment to say that the messengers were righteous men of not angels as the locality and popularly believed, and that they had been commissioned by God convey to Abraham and Lot the warning that Lot's people were about to be punished on account of their vices and iniquities and to take Lot to a place of safety. Lot was distressed when the messengers arrived because his people being robbers were apprehensive of strangers visiting their city and therefore they had forbidden Lot to receive outsiders.
