PT. 10 AT-TAUBAH CH. 9 الْاَنْهرُ خَلِدِينَ فِيهَا ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ flow rivers; therein they shall الْعَظِيمُن abide. That is the supreme وَجَاءَ الْمُعَذِرُونَ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ لِيُؤْذَنَ make R. 12. those who triumph. 90. And لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ الَّذِيْنَ كَذَبُوا اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ Arabs, came that exemption سَيُصِيبُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ اليمن excuses from among the desert might be granted them. And those who were false to Allah and His Messenger stayed at home. A grievous punishment shall befall those of them who disbelieve. 1240 nor on the sick, nor on those لَيْسَ عَلَى الضُّعَفَاءِ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرْضى No blame lies on the weak". 91 وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنْفِقُونَ who find naught to spend if حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوْا لِلَّهِ وَرَسُوْلِهِ مَا they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is no cause of Commentary: a48:18. For the meaning of the words, their hearts are sealed, see 2:8 & 4:156. 1240. Important Words: (those who make excuses) is which is the active ('adhdhara). عذر the plural of participle from which again is derived from ('adhara). They say i. e. he excused him or he cleared him from blame, or he accepted his excuse. ('adhdhara) means, he was without excuse; or he affected to excuse himself but had no excuse; or he excused himself but did not adduce a valid excuse for doing so; he was remiss or wanting or deficient in an affair, setting up an excuse for being so; he did not act vigorously in the affair, causing it to be imagined that he had an excuse when really he had none. Thus is one who falls short of his duty and then excuses himself without having any real excuse; whereas is one who excuses himself whether he has a real excuse or not (Lane). 1185 Commentary: The verse speaks of the hypocrites as well as of those weak of faith who did not join the expedition to Tabūk. Some of them were disbelievers at heart, while others were only weak of faith.
