658 Ā'ĪNA-E-KAMĀLĀT-E-ISLĀM―DĀFI‘UL-WASĀWIS At that time, Maulawi Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen was speaking in support of Mirza Ṣāḥib. His speech was about to end; I regret that I could not hear all of it. I did hear from other people that it was an excellent speech. Then Hamid Shah recited his couplets on the truthfulness and appreciation of Mirza Ṣāḥib. However, since I was still not favourably inclined and my heart was over- cast with doubts, I did not listen to them with much interest and love. Nevertheless, the couplets were excellent. May Allah the Exalted reward the author. When I met Mirza Ṣāḥib and he greeted me with courtesy, my heart melted. It was as if the appearance of Mirza Ṣāḥib eliminated the clouds of darkness from the eyes of my heart and the bitterness and anger began to dry up. I started seeing the truth faintly, and gradually the inner darkness was fully cured. There were many attendees of the Jalsa whom I used to see with hatred and enmity, but now I started viewing them with love and affection to the extent that those who were dearer to Mirza Şahib, felt dearer to me. After Asr Mirza Ṣāḥib made a brief statement. After lis- tening to it, all my suspicions were dispelled, and my eyes were opened. Next morning a lawyer from Amritsar narrated his wonderful story, which proved to be a miracle of the highest degree of Mirza Ṣāḥib. The substance of it is that the said law- yer used to be a Muslim of the Sunnah Jama'at. When he grew up and studied the traditional subjects, he started entertaining misgivings due to his lack of familiarity with religious stud- ies and because the scholars of the time and the pirs [spiritual mentors] of the age did not abide by the teachings of the Faith in their actions. Not finding any satisfactory response to his queries from anyone, he changed his religion several times. He went from being a Sunni to a Shia, but there he did not see any- thing except tabarra [cursing some Companions" as "enemies'] and ta'ziah sazi [processions involving replica mausoleums to
