LETTER FROM MUHAMMAD HUSAIN BATĀLAWI because it is intended to make your followers think that you are well-intentioned and steadfastly established upon your claim, and ready to face your opponents. The intention to create mis- chief consists in wishing the other party to issue point-by-point rebuttals, thereby helping create dissension among the Muslims of Batala. The above is a rejoinder to your claims of revelation, righteousness, well-wishing, and mercy. Now I proceed to reply to your request that: 'My humble self should come to you and submit to you fearing the revela- tions and dreams of yourself and your followers or that I should allow you to publish those revelations and dreams consisting of warnings. ' If you are inviting my humble self to visit you for the pur- pose that I should make enquiries from you regarding your false beliefs, then from this point of view my coming is useless. We Muslims now have no doubts concerning the falsity of your erroneous beliefs. Therefore, there remains absolutely no need or requirement to make any enquiry. If, however, you have any doubt or misgiving, you can, as always, come to my humble abode at any time. You will be treated just as you have been treated before, and God willing, I shall try to satisfy you. And if you are inviting my humble self to visit you so that you may show me some heavenly Sign, then to come for this purpose would not only be of no benefit but would, in fact, be a sin and cause for harm. A believer can never hope for a Sign from a person whose beliefs contradict Islam and the for- mer faiths. And even if he were to show something through his trickery, jugglery, or mesmerism, etc. , it would be against Islam to put any faith in it. You, too, have admitted this in your own announcement. Of course, my going there would not only be permissible but spiritually meritorious if upon arriving there I were to make 359
