8 Ā'ĪNA-E-KAMĀLĀT-E-ISLĀM―DĀFI‘UL-WASĀWIS Thus, they entered the religion of Allah, striving and selling their selves to seek the pleasure of Allah, ar-Raḥmān [the Gracious]. They were shaken with a violent shaking until the matter became straitened and their calamities became unbearable for them. Despite their lack of strength, they set out at night, pleased with the decree of Allah until the sun of Divine help dawned upon them, and they alighted in jubi- lation amidst comfort and redolence. They entered into the Presence of Allah with full force and shattered all the fetters and idols that hin- dered them from entering this palace. They placed themselves as an obstacle in the way of all troubles befalling Islam and forgot all their past afflictions before these sorrows. They spent their nights before their Lord—prostrating and standing—never tasting sleep but briefly. They lost themselves in following the Messenger of Allah. They did not deviate nor depart from the Word of the Loving God in following any school of thought. They stood up in every place of danger for the rejuvenating faith of Allah. They severed all ties with every companion and bosom friend for the sake of Allah and His Messenger till they drew swords out of sheaths. They preferred rags to luxurious and lavish garments, deprived themselves of bodily pleasures and worldly com- forts, and remained content with [drinking] hot water while eschew- ing water that was cold and sweet. The world was nothing more than a coffin in their eyes. They feared Allah as He should be feared in all their deeds and words. They feared the trials of the tongue and demeaning remarks to the extent they became akin to a shy virgin, preferring to remain silent and restraining their speech. They followed the example of the Messenger of Allah as in their words, deeds, activity, inactivity, moral- ity and conduct, and in the cultivation of their inner selves and the acquisition of virtue. Hence, Allah granted them a heart that inclined towards truth, a tongue adorned with veracity, and a soul liberated from ill-will, rancour, and enmity. Allah the Exalted was well pleased with them, and He caused them to alight into His Gardens of Pleasure. Their good account has been conveyed to us. Certainly, they were
