AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE Rüḥul-Qudus [the Holy Spirit] imparts spiritual life and light into hearts; thus, it is called Nür [Light] and Rūḥ [Spirit] AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE Commentary on the verse: and helped] وَأَيَّدَهُمْ بِرُوحِ مِنْهُ 'Light' and 'life' refer to the Holy Spirit because it dispels darkness and resurrects hearts. This is why it is called the 'Holy Spirit'; that is, the spirit of holiness, whose entry imparts a life of holiness. Imprinting faith into the hearts means that faith permeated their innate and physical desires and became a part of their dispositions, without any intervening formality or artificiality. This stage, whereby faith enters the very veins and sinews of the heart, is attained by man when, having been strengthened by the Holy Spirit, he receives a new life. Just as life always resides within the physical body for its protec- tion and keeps shining its light upon it, so should the Holy Spirit of this new life make its abode within and shed its light, at every moment and at all times, upon the heart. Just as the physical body is alive every moment through the breath of life, the heart and all spiritual faculties remain alive with the Holy Spirit. 1. Surah al-Mujādalah, 58:23 [Publisher]
