PREFACE ESSENCE OF ISLAM III It is for this reason that God Almighty, after stating that faith has been imprinted upon the hearts of such people, AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE also states, We helped them with the Holy Description of the functions Spirit; for, when faith becomes inscribed upon the heart of man, and when it pene- of the Holy Spirit trates the very borders of his nature, he undergoes a process of rebirth which can never be accomplished without the help of the Holy Spirit. This indeed is why the Holy Spirit is called the Holy Spirit, because one acquires a pure spirit upon its entry. The Holy Quran is replete with the references of spiritual life and refers to the perfect believers again and again as ‘alive' and refers to the disbelievers as 'dead. This also indicates that perfect believers are granted a life upon the entry of the Holy Spirit into them, but the dis- believers, even though physically alive, are deprived of the life that bestows a life of faith upon the heart and mind. Bear in mind here that a great deal is men- tioned again and again in support of this noble verse in the aḥadīth of the Holy Prophetas. In [Saḥīḥ al-]Bukhārī, there is AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE Hadith in Bukhārī attesting to the Holy Spirit's perma- nent companionship with believers a hadith related on the authority of Ḥaḍrat ‘Ãyeshah, may Allah be pleased with her, as follows: Meaning that: The Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, placed a pulpit in the mosque for Hassan bin Thabit, who would contest with the disbelievers on behalf of the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, responding to their calumnies with praise [for the Holy Prophet]. So, the Holy Prophet, may peace and
