INDIA'S MUSLIM CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; who is not pleased with a believer who loves the Messenger of Allah; who vilifies our Prophet and Master, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, with words that make the hearts of Muslims tremble, could have praised Muhammad Husain. We do not deny the compliment [was made]; perhaps the Christians do perceive Batālawī as such. It may be that he said something that pleased the enemies of the Messenger of Allah. However, we do not consider it appropriate to speak about this, nor do we wish to elaborate on this matter any fur- ther. Every person is held accountable for his words, and Allah sees both the righteous servants as well as the evildoers. As for the statement and notion of this slanderer that I desire a worldly kingdom or a lordship in this country, it is nothing but a clear lie. I call on everyone who hearkens to bear witness that I do not seek a worldly kingdom and do not desire lordship of this world and its fleeting beauty. I desire only the heavenly kingdom, which does not diminish or perish or come to an end by death. I do not seek to subjugate people through governance, politics, and judicial authority. On the contrary, I desire [for people] a resolve by which inner passions are subjugated in order to attain the pleasure of that Master who is the Best of Judges. It is not my principle to promote disorder, corruption, and destruction. Instead, I invite to peace, righteousness, and the path of the vir- tuous, and I want people to repent in the manner that the most pious repent. My greatest desire is for mankind to seek the truth about faith; and incline towards understanding the intricacies of divine cognition; and increase mercy and compassion towards one another; and cease committing sins and various types of evil. I am striving to achieve this purpose through exhortations to goodness, prayer, deep reflection, and determination. These are my principles. Whoever attributes to me 71
