INDIA'S MUSLIM CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY heavens above us there are no clouds that a critic may ascribe to darkness, nor does our quiver contain only a single arrow that we should fear the enemy archers. This foolish, false accuser did not realize that the British government is discerning and contemplative and discerns every word and its underlying cause. It recognizes every deception and its promoters, and does not adopt the view of every greedy slanderer. Thus, no one can deceive or mislead this government because it recognizes the slanderous traitor and infiltrator who spreads lies and false testimony. It does not burn with anger like those who are deceived; rather, the eagle of its wrath swoops down upon the liars. It fixes its gaze on those who prey upon the weak and does not overlook the actions of the wrongdoers. And so, the conclusive argument, which absolves us from the slander of this man, saves us from his wickedness, and prevents him from achieving his objective—is that which I have men- tioned above. Allah knows that I am innocent of these defamatory accusa- tions. Indeed, I am deserving of the great gifts the government bestows upon me; and of the goodly reward that it grants with its appreciation; and of the help it gives me in my times of need; and of its consideration of me as among those who are benefi- cent towards it. This is [the truth of] the matter about which there is not an iota of doubt, and everyone knows it. However, I have no remedy for the shameless slanderer and wicked fault- finder. I have now said everything there is to say to refute the liars. As for the praise that this man lavished upon Shaikh Batālawi-i. e. Muhammad Husain, proprietor of the Isha'at[us- Sunnah] newspaper-and his saying that he is an excellent man deserving to be exalted, I do not understand the secret behind this matter.
