INDIA'S MUSLIM CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY than spending it upon this faction, which is a manifestation of Satan and which wasted the precious wealth of people in biting and chewing without any consideration for this life or the hereafter. They left Islam for but a few reasons, the greatest of which was a surplus of foolishness and a deficit of reasoning. Beyond that, what led most of them to commit apostasy was the fire of hunger and restless drive to eat an evening meal; greed for delicious food; desire for a bottomless glass of wine; longing for maidens, yearning to hear songs, and fondness for going to see beautiful women in the morning; to mingle with female singers; and other such repulsive desires. For this reason they fell upon the material world with covetous hearts—like flies on pus and mucus—and completely disregarded the hereafter. They have no vocation left besides drinking wine, dragging their robes behind them with vanity and pride, eating refined bread, filling their bellies with cups of wine, and insulting holy people. I observe that wine is their place of rest, the evening drink is their close companion, and the stomach is their faith. They have brazenly forgotten the grandeur of Allah. Neither do their tongues refrain from falsehood, deceit, and lying, nor do they seek to save themselves from the filth of falsehood and disgrace. These are their actions and yet they curse the innocent. They have forgotten the hereafter and are no longer concerned with it, having been deceived by the doc- trine of Atonement. An-Nafsul-Ammārah [the self that incites to evil] has conquered them. They eat what they like and say whatever they please. Nourished on the milk of discord, they do not recognize the qualities of justice. Nothing compelled them to this save the self that is morally unrestrained and very desirous. Hence, they forsook the truth in favour of falsehood and abandoned the people on the right path. 65
