INDIA'S MUSLIM CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY joined the Christian community, I do not perceive them as providing any service to the government or being loyal to this Queen. Rather, I find that they are flatterers and hypocrites. The majority of them accepted Christianity only to relieve their hunger pangs and to fill their cup of desires to the brim. One morning, upon realising they have been turned out from the pasture, they shall all scatter and amaze people by the swiftness of their return. For some years now I have observed that they are ready to break their covenant like the dishon- ourable. I do not find any distinction in them save for their fondness for alcohol and lavish dishes, and their vulture-like love of carrion [i. e. the material world]. We observe them liv- ing only in opulence. The British government shall soon learn how many of them are sincere and truthful. By God we see with our own eyes that the vast majority of those who left Islam and joined Christianity did so due to psychological challenges, burdens of debt, hunger, and carnal passions. The Muslims were well aware of the bad traits and mischief of such people, so they did not care to learn the rea- son for their exodus. This group turned towards the Christian priests because they saw the glow of their prosperity, the embel- lishments of their world, and the vastness of their wealth. In spite of all this, they found them to be careless about their true purposes, like the foolish. They considered the churches to be the place of the ignorant so they inclined towards them deceitfully. The Muslims of our country were not able to care for these indolent people, nor provide for their food, drink, and clothing, nor leave them excused and relaxing like expectant mothers. They could not personally assume their expenses and leave them free to eat and enjoy while doing nothing. This is because the Muslims are a weak and impoverished people who do not have a surplus to spend on others. So wherefrom and 61
