REFUTING OBJECTIONS them from the attacks of every transgressor. Verily it has deliv- ered us from many forms of trouble and heartache; so if we do not express our gratitude, then we will be unjust. We are obliged to be thankful by virtue of our faith and integrity, for 'he who is not grateful to people is not grateful to Allah. Indeed Allah loves those who act justly. We will not forget the days and the times that we lived through prior to this gov- ernment. By God, save for a day or two, we did not have two minutes of peace and security, and we used to spend our days and nights in fear. I published those books on such topics in every country and distributed them among all peoples. I sent them to distant lands belonging to the Arabs, non-Arabs, and others, in order that deviant minds may become rightly guided by way of the exhortations therein; and perhaps they may become willing to thank the government and become obedient to it; and so that the disorder of the rebellious may decline. And perhaps such people may learn that this government is beneficent towards them, and thus come to love it as obedient subjects. This is my labour and this is my service—Allah knows my intention- and He is the Best of Reckoners. I did not do this out of fear of this government, or in the hope of a reward or honour from it. Rather, I did this only for the sake of Allah and out of obedience to the command of Khātamun-Nabiyyīn [the Seal of the Prophets]. For, our Prophet, Chief, and Master—who is the beloved of Allah and His friend-Muhammad Mustafāsas [the Chosen One], com- manded us to praise those who are benefactors and thank those who are beneficent. For this reason, I thanked and helped this government to the best of my ability. I also related its favours in every country from India to Arabia and Rome, and encour- aged people to be obedient to it. Whoever is in doubt may 55
