REFUTING OBJECTIONS changed completely. So let him see who has clear vision or an honest heart. My father remained devoted to such service until he grew old and the time of his death drew near and he had to depart. Were I to relate all his services, this space would not be suffi- cient, nor would I be able to relate them adequately. In short, my father faithfully followed the rising of the state, and sup- ported it in times of need, so much so that the government honoured him with letters expressing its gratitude and con- ferred gifts upon him at every stage, and sympathized with him, and graciously favoured him with consideration, and counted him among its sincere well-wishers. When my father passed away, my brother, Mirza Ghulam Qādir, took his place on this path. The government liberally bestowed its favours upon him just as it did with my father. Some years after the passing of my father, my brother also passed away. After they both passed away, I followed in their footsteps and emulated their example, hearkening back to their times. However, I was not accustomed to abundance or to a life of ease, to prosperity and wealth, nor was I a man of property and lands. Instead, after their deaths, I turned completely to Allah and became like those withdrawn from the world. My Lord drew me towards Himself and appointed a holy station for me and He bestowed a great many blessings of the Religion upon me. He led me away from the impurities of the world towards His holy abode. Whatever I was given, He gave to me, and He made me a Mulham and a Muhaddath [the recip- ient of revelation and discourse]. I possessed neither the treas- ures of the world nor steeds of stature, but I was gifted horses for pens and jewels for expression. I was granted a light that protects me from stumbling and manifests upon me the true 51
