506 THE LIGHT OF TRUTH-PART TWO them in all their paths out of His mercy and love; and thwarting the schemes of the mischief-makers. When Allah decides to humiliate a particular person, He makes them an enemy of His Auliyā' and among the most obstinate. So he speaks ill of the Walī and abuses him, and words of wickedness spew from his mouth. It may be that his Lord grants him respite due to his lack of understanding, excess of delusion, and his inability to compre- hend the [divine] secret and its forms due to the loftiness of its mean- ings. However, if he understands the truth and yet does not choose right path, he falls from the caring eye of the Gracious God; and Allah extinguishes the light of faith from him and places him among the los- ers. This is one of the kinds of miracles of the Auliyā', as Allah humili- ates every false accuser and deceiver to honour them. Hence, those who accuse me of disbelief and heresy and consider me of the evil disbelievers, like Shaikh Batālawi, a person of arro- gance and falsehood, and every person who issued edicts accusing me of disbelief, ascribed immorality and misguidance to me, and did not impart my words according to their true meanings: Listen! I invite such people, like my invitation to the Christians, to this confrontation and call them to this battle if they are truthful, and I have already been informed by my Lord that they will be defeated. I swear by Allah that I am not from among the ulama and intel- lectuals. All that I state, of various kinds of eloquent speech or of the commentary of the Quran, is from Allah, the Gracious; but everything I err in is of my own accord, and all that is true is from my Lord. Verily, my Lord had me drink from the chalice of divine knowledge. However, I do not absolve myself of oversight or forgetfulness, but Allah does not allow me to remain in error for even a moment. He safeguards me from every falsehood and protects me from the ways of the wicked. O ye who are plagued by fantasies, false claims, and deceitful- ness! If you consider yourselves of the knowledgeable, scholarly, and intellectual; or of the righteous, the Auliyā, and the God-fearing; or from among those whose prayers are heard, like the beloved [of God];
