SIGNS TO STRIKE FEAR INTO THE HEARTS of man. Follow not in the footsteps of Satan, and come to me as believers. I pray to Allah that He may grant you all understand- ing, sight, a tongue and heart, ears, and a strong will, and that He guide you and make you among the rightly guided. O ignorant ones! Know that Allah will not allow the Religion to go to waste. His practice has continued, as has His custom; i. e. when a period of darkness arrives and Islam is made the target of arrows; when both the elite and common folk speak ill of it; when the people choose the ways of apostasy; and when they create extreme mischief, at that time, Divine Providence turns to the defence and support of Islam and sends a servant for its assistance, who renews the Religion of Allah with his knowledge, truthfulness, and devotion. Allah makes this emissary righteous and worthy of munificence; through His favours, He makes him adept; He opens his eyes; He bestows upon him evergreen knowledge; and He makes him an inheritor of the Prophetic sciences. He comes in garments which contrast with the garments of the corruption of the age, and he says only that which he has learned from the tongue of the Gracious God; and he is bestowed diverse kinds of creative skills from the Source of Plenitude on those occasions when the nations' denizens engage in mischief. Then, do not wonder that the spirituality of the moon receives a share of the light of Allah when it is eclipsed, as well as the spirituality of the sun, when it is eclipsed. This is from among the divine mysteries and godly wonders, so do not be among the doubters. Perhaps you harbour a doubt in your heart that the Quran does not point to Ramadan. Know that the Furqan has men- tioned it [the eclipse] in general terms, which is sufficient for the one possessing sight and purity, and thus requires no detailed explanation or clarification. 429
