SIGNS TO STRIKE FEAR INTO THE HEARTS Thereafter, know that Allah put it in my heart that the lunar and solar eclipses in Ramadan are two Signs to strike fear into a people who followed Satan, adopted iniquity and oppression, incited mischief and loved instigating rebellion, and did not relent. So, Allah frightens such people with these two [Signs], as well as every person who follows their own vain thoughts and acts treacherously, who forsakes truth and resorts to lying, and disobeys Allah the Gracious. Allah calls out that if they seek forgiveness, He will surely grant them forgiveness and show them favour and goodness. But if they should refuse, then the time for punishment has come. In these two [Signs] is a warning for those who quarrel without justification and do not fear the Lord of Requital; and a threat to the one who disobeys and behaves proudly and does not abandon rebelliousness. So fear Allah and be not trouble- makers, creating mischief in the earth. What is the matter with you that you do not fear Him while the Sign of striking fear has appeared from the Lord of all the worlds! It has been established conclusively in Şahih al-Bukhārī and Şahih Muslim from the Prophet of Mankind and Jinn, and the Imam of Both Realms, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him in both worlds, that—in order to help the believers understand-he said: إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِهِ يُخَوِّفُ اللهُ بِهِمَا عِبَادَهُ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ. [Verily, the sun and the moon are two Signs from the Signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life (i. e. birth); rather, they are two Signs from among His Signs; Allah 417
