QAŞĪDAH ON THE LUNAR AND SOLAR ECLIPSES The case has been adjudicated and the testimonies of two witnesses have corroborated one another, So that my Master might bring my arrogant archenemy to tears. The moon is like a dove in its elegance; The sun resembles a hoopoe in conveying glad tidings. The segments of each [eclipse] guide the hearts as though they were, Scrolls unfolding to revive the exemplary designs of the Sun [i. e. the Holy Prophetsas]; Or it were as though a tattoo artist blackened her design, Upon the slender cheek of a soft and delicate face. O you who make accusations out of haste, Out of envy, your cloud has dissipated and split apart. I would watch the haste of your mindless followers with sorrow, But today the ranks of the mischief-makers have disintegrated. 341
