THE ULAMA OF INDIA 9 oppress the weak. We are therefore grateful for the peace and com- fort we enjoy under its protection. It is Allah's blessing upon us and His favour that He did not place us under an unjust ruler who would trample us underfoot and show no mercy. Instead, He granted us a merciful Queen who nurtures with an outpouring of favours and benevolence. She raises us up from the depths of weakness and dis- grace. May Allah grant her the best reward that a just ruler should receive on account of just treatment of her subjects, and grant her recompense generously, bless her and grant her blessings, grant her the favour of accepting Tauhid [Oneness of God] and Islam. May He have mercy on her as she has shown us mercy, and our Lord is the Most Merciful. Dear brothers, you know that these fatwas of takfir are not based upon investigation, nor do they contain any element of truth. Rather, they were woven dishonestly on the loom of deception, cruelty, and lies, motivated by personal jealousy. Indeed, these people were well aware of us and knew our belief, and see with their own eyes that we are Muslims, we believe in Allah, the One and Only, without equal, the Independent and Besought of all; we attest Lā ilaha illallāh [there is no god but Allah], and we believe in the Book of Allah, the Quran, and in His Messenger, our Chief, Muhammad, Khātamun-Nabiyyin [the Seal of the Prophets], and we believe in the Angels and the Day of Judgement and in heaven and hell. We offer the Şalāh [Prayer] and we fast, and we face the Qiblah. We consider unlawful that which Allah and His Messenger declared unlawful, and we consider lawful that which Allah and His Messenger declared lawful. We neither add to, nor remove anything from the Shariah, even by the weight of an atom. We accept everything that has come to us from the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, whether or not we understand its mystery or comprehend its reality. We are, by the grace of Allah, Muslims who believe in the Oneness of God.
