306 THE LIGHT OF TRUTH-PART ONE not desire to understand with an earnest heart and an open mind. You tread only the paths of stubbornness and you know only the ways of injustice. You were never made to drink the milk of justice, and I see you only as inequitable. Have you managed to learn the reality of the Quran despite the fact that you lack knowledge of its language and are far removed from the paths of [Divine] cognition? Do you con- sider this vast sea to be a hidden mirage, even though you are blind and one-eyed? You know not a single letter of the linguistic sciences of Arabic. You possess not even a whit from its literary orchards. Rather, I perceive you to be like a miserable and impoverished person wander- ing aimlessly in the darkness of the night. Then, there are your bold claims-you who languish in ignorance and error and deny the sun of knowledge [the Quran] through all manner of machinations and deceit which are [a matter of] great arrogance and age-old transgres- sion. Holy is my Lord! See how He gives respite to these evildoers! O ignorant ones! You assail a Book whose every line contains hid- den jewels of wisdom, whose prestige and renown has been conveyed from one generation to the next, whose infallibility and purity are renowned; whose purity and lustrous beauty are widely recognized and accepted; and whose influence and force are widespread. Indeed, only one whose nature suffers from corruption would reject the Quran. Do you not see the towering castle that the Quran has built? Or the fields of knowledge that the Furqan has perfected? Or the light placed in it by the Gracious God? By God, the Quran has no equal in bringing the dead back to life and in breathing spirit into bones and broken particles. It came at a time when the efforts of the righteous were gradually dying out. Appearing after the night had become darkest, it found creation akin to a gaunt and poverty-stricken pauper, or like one slumbering in the night. It cast its vast light upon the face of men and women more so than even the brightest part of the day. It provided them with pearls of knowledge and many kinds of light. Look around: Is there any equal to it in terms of its effect? Look again-do you see any parallel?
