REFUTING OBJECTIONS Allah said is good. However, woe be to those who did not com- prehend his teachings. I shed tears over the condition of the transgressors and those who abuse and vilify us. Indeed we pray to Allah to guide them and have mercy on them, for He is the Best of those who show mercy. By God I do not mock you, but rather I weep over your condition, that you conceal the true matter and put on a façade, O unjust ones. What is the matter with you that you do not understand? I show you but you do not see. I give but you do not take. You spread falsehood yet you feel no shame. I rouse you from your slumber but you do not awaken. Do you not fear Him to whom you will be returned? Or do you think you will be given free rein forever? I have just stated that the Quran does not paint only one picture of the Christians, but rather, makes some of them as witnesses to [the condition of] the others. It says: Some of them worship the Messiah and intentionally take him as a god; oth- ers among them worship his mother along with him and praise her with great reverence; and there is also a small sect among them that worships Allah and considers Him to be Gracious and Merciful, and regards the Messiah to be a mere mortal and human being. These were the three factions that were present at the time of our Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Quran has been read out to Christians for centuries but not one of them objected that the Quran attributes to them that which conflicts with their beliefs or the teachings of their leaders; that it does not understand the concept of the Trinity; or that it errs in conveying their beliefs. If you think anyone has made assertions like these, or you have found a book that bears witness to such statements, then bring forth your book if you are truthful. However, if you are unable to, then fear Allah and do not follow the views of an immoral people. 297
