The Light of Truth — Page 227
REFUTING OBJECTIONS you not accept my counsel? And why do you oppose the true beliefs? And why do you not join those who are guided along the right path? I give you thirst-quenching honey but you run towards life-threatening poison-is it you wish to perish? As for this notion of yours—that in the Holy Quran, Allah names Jesus 'a rūh [spirit]' from the Gracious God, but nowhere does He call him a man or declare him to be from among mankind—I am astonished by you: Why is it that you do not despise brazen lies, and how are you not ashamed of tell- ing tall tales. You flick your tongue menacingly like a snake, and you do not relent. Angry and anxious, you stumble about like a drunkard-seeing neither peak nor valley—and you fear not [becoming] the lowest of the low. Have you placed the delight of your eyes and the happiness of your hearts in lies? And do you content yourselves with abandoning the search for truth and casting away the rope of Allah even though it is near to you? Have you become a hostile people? Woe to you! You have turned away from a garden and fallen into a cesspit. Indeed, you have forsaken a verdant forest in favour of a desert. You left the carriage of truth and adopted the path of hardship and followed the ways of liars. If you think that the Quran confirms and supports your assertion and says, with respect to Jesus, that he is the Rūh from God, and accepts that he originated from the Being of God Himself-then such a thought is nothing but patent igno- rance, vile illusion, and manifest error. Then, if it is supposed that the word of the Exalted God رُوحُ مِنْهُ ]Ruhun minhu[¹ increases the status of the Son of Mary, and makes him the Son of God and more exalted and more respected, then it follows that the status of Adam must be higher and greater than that of Jesus. 1. A mercy from Him. (Sūrah an-Nisa', 4:172) [Publisher] 227
