REFUTING OBJECTIONS 225 descended upon Abraham, Ishmael the Sacrificed, and others from among the Messengers. So fear the Lord of mankind and concern yourself with finding the right path. Strive to attain true guidance, renounce the ways of slumber, and exert great effort! Can an-nāzil [that which descends] be the same as munzal 'alaih [that upon which it descends]? Nay, there is no doubt that they are two distinct things, which is apparent to everyone who can see and all reasonable people. What greater proof can there be for a fair-minded people who hasten eagerly towards the truth and do not, like the blind, forsake the right path? What difference is there between the Spirit that descended upon Jesus and the Spirit that came to Moses, who is Kalimu Rabbil 'Alamin? Do you not ponder carefully-O unjust ones!-falling, instead, for the false accounts of liars? Have you not read what is written in Chapter 11 of the Torah? Verily it is the word of the Most Truthful of those who speak. And that is: The Lord said unto Moses, ‘I will come down to you and talk with you there. And I will take the Spirit which is upon you, and will place it upon them, i. e. over the elders of the Children of Israel, and they were seventy in number. ² Likewise, the same Spirit descended upon Jesus' forefathers as well as his spiritual guide-David [Dawūd] and John [Yahyā], respectively-and upon others from among the Prophets. There is no need to belabour the point, waste more time, and elongate the argument, for the elect and the laymen alike from among the Christians know this and do not deny any of it. O foolish one who is both unwise and censurable! Why do you not look carefully at the Books of earlier nations? Why do 1.
