INDIA'S MUSLIM CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY O converts to Christianity and those who transgress blindly! Assuredly, you have done a most monstrous thing and strayed completely from the right path. You worship one who has died and passed away. You glorify the decayed remains of bones while belittling the truthful ones. There are those among you who if someone speaks to them, they hurt him by their words in con- versations, and when they are greeted with peace, they only disparage. You say: 'We have been imparted forbearance and taught peace, but we do not find among you a single adversary with these qualities, or even one champion personifying these traits. On the contrary, we find you bent upon doing harm and eager to make mischief. You slander the righteous and curse the pious. You strut about arrogantly and devote yourselves to fri- volity. You adopted the Christian faith only to become keepers of thoroughbreds and masters of enviable wealth; to parade around in ornate robes, and to be carefree with regard to your livelihood; to gain that which your souls desire and in which your eyes delight; and to enjoy the fruits of worldly pleasures while being idle. By God, the immorality of the Christians spread greatly in our country and cast the people into all kinds of ruin. Their bodies became soiled from the filth of sin, but they did not incline towards [the use of] a water pail. This excessive filth of theirs ultimately led them to their [spiritual] demise, yet at no point did they seek to bathe. They became bare like cattle instead of reaching for the garments of blessings. They became enamoured with gold, and their faith flew off and departed. So they fell upon the world as traitors [to faith]. Likewise, the poison of tyranny and oppression flowed 193
