REFUTING OBJECTIONS their devotion and the level of their holiness, and how they are pure from the stains of the physical self and soul. So He named them 'Ruh' to illustrate the majesty of their character and the purity of their hearts. They shall be addressed by this title on the Day of Judgement, so that Allah may show His creation the extent of their detachment [from the world], and may differ- entiate between those who are evil and those who are good. By God this is the truth, so contemplate the Book of Allah and do not be hasty in rejecting. Now, as for Jesus, may peace be upon him, you know that the Quran does not call him 'God' or the son of God'; rather, it vindicates him from all that has been alleged. It refutes all such statements, whether they are exaggerations or omissions, and furnishes proof against them. It clarifies that he was a servant of God and from among the Muqarrabīn [those granted nearness to God]. In one place, the Quran states: وَ قَالُوا اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَلَدًا سُبُحْنَهُ بَلْ عِبَادُ مُكْرَمُونَ 10 وَمَنْ يَقُلْ مِنْهُمْ إِنِّي إِلهُ مِنْ دُونِهِ فَذَلِكَ نَجْزِيهِ جَهَنَّمَ كَذلِكَ نَجْزِي الظَّلِمِينَ 20 The Quran sets a condition for those who are to be considered الظَّالِمِين ]az-zalimin-the wrongdoers] with the words مِنْ دُونِهِ [min-dūnihi-besides Him] to exempt thereby a group of people whose hearts were captivated by God's love. Their hearts became stirred to the point that enthralment, ecstasy, and the obsession of lovers took hold of them. Words sprang from their 159 1. And they say, "The Gracious God has taken to Himself a son. Holy is He. Nay, they are only honoured servants (Sūrah al-Anbiyā', 21:27). [Publisher] 2. And whosoever of them should say, 'I am a god beside Him, him shall We re- quite with Hell. Thus do We requite the wrongdoers (Sūrah al-Anbiyā', 21:30). [Publisher]
