A QAŞĪDAH ON FAITH & THE WORLD 147 Yet out of stubbornness my people call me a disbeliever, And accuse me of apostasy and distortion. O ye who curse me! Do not invite destruction due to your hastiness; Do not talk nonsense that you may become subject to humiliation. A hasty departure is difficult for a virtuous person; And a virtuous person greets you like an affectionate friend. So do not be astonished by my declarations and claims, For I have been taught many hidden verities. The Gracious God placed many mysteries in His Holy Word; And He concealed divine secrets in many statements, like one who speaks by way of allusion. Many of His words are most subtle and fine, And delicate, like a slender maiden. Only the wise and contemplative grasp such subtleties; But he who is simple-minded, like the gluttonous, cannot comprehend.
