A QAŞĪDAH ON FAITH & THE WORLD They tried to turn lions into sheep, But the Lion of Allah is a lion—not a sheep. They charge like a fierce lion, While their appearance is like that of a beloved and noble steed. Their inner being is like the belly of an ass-void of righteousness, And their stomachs are like bowls for food. I see an ignorant and wicked person, born of a wicked person, Who bares the flame of his tongue like a sharp sword. The barking of a dog cannot cast dust upon the moon, Which was created free of dust and smoke. O greedy and miserly one! Like the destitute, you have fallen into disgrace. You do not have knowledge of true guidance; Out of ignorance, you carry about the Gospel of the Christians in the way a donkey carries a load. 125
