REFUTING OBJECTIONS and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit in the kingdom of God. And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last. What I have quoted here in Arabic is from your scripture, the Gospel of Luke. I have neither added to it nor taken away any- thing; rather, I have copied it as it is. Those who condemn me yet seek knowledge may consult that book if they are in doubt. Do not turn away from this, and do not allow burning malice and resentment to incinerate you. Reflect like a fair-minded person. Observe that the Messiah has named you in this verse ‘workers of Zulm' [iniquity]. Jesus fur- ther states: 'I shall disavow you on the Day of Judgement and turn away from you completely; and I say that you are not from me nor from my disciples, so be away with you, O iniquitous disbelievers. ' He indicated that you have covered up the truth with falsehood, and forsaken His command, and that you are a deceitful people. You know that the reality of zulm is to miscontextualize a thing deliberately, with the intention of obscuring the right path, and to block any way of deriving benefit from it, and to obscure the matter for those who tread the spiritual path. As such, the zālim [iniquitous one] is the one who assumes the position of interpolators and alters statements like traitors. He dares to interpolate where there was but a little, and reduce where there had been much, both in terms of quality and quan- tity [i. e. meanings and words]; or alters the meaning of words, 107
