REFUTING OBJECTIONS helped by His granting of honour [to me], and He is the Best of Helpers. He revealed to me that the [Promised Messiah's] war shall be a spiritual war to be waged by spiritual means. It amazes me that these people allege that Jesus will not fight Gog and Magog; rather, he will pray against them-during a period of great adversity and attacks of the enemies—like an arrow that hits its mark. Likewise, they read the word nazar [spiritual insight] in the books of hadith but then they forget it, and they do not ponder like those given to reason. Allah has set a seal on their hearts, so they fail to grasp even the slight- est subtlety of knowledge, nor a single nuance among the fine points of wisdom. Indeed I observe that their intellect has fro- zen over and its clouds have darkened. For this reason, they do not examine the pearls of truth nor scrutinize its details. They swim along the surface of words but do not dive deep into the ocean of meanings. Who can teach someone whom Allah has not granted understanding? How can one whom Allah has not guided become rightly guided? This is the doctrine that I have publicized repeatedly in my books. Because of this, I was called a kāfir, abused, accused of lying, and I was abandoned like the one who is left alone in an arid desert. In these times I am like a foreigner at an inn, not like a troublemaker under the protection of his brethren. I do not desire a kingdom; indeed, I chose [a life of] austerity. I spurned the fur pelt of governorship and contented myself with the coarse woollen wrap of the poor. I paid no attention to the taunting of the onlookers or the criticism of the fault-finders. So do not hasten to ill-thinking, O ye who rush to eat from the plates of the priests, nor charge forward threateningly, for my matter is clear, and none of it is in your hands, nor are you among the rulers. So if you enjoy exploring the many ways of slandering, know that you will fail. You will accomplish nothing besides exposing your own censurable behaviour. You cannot 103
