They are entrenched in such beliefs and they are not those who relent and return [to the right path]. Instead, they proclaim this from atop the minbars and mention it as glad tidings to one another. Among the great- est of their innermost desires is that their imaginary messiah should descend as a mighty king and kill every disbeliever on the earth; he would then gather vast spoils—treasures upon treasures—and make Batālawi and his brethren wealthy. As for me, I do not hold such beliefs; rather, I know full well that they have erred in these views. The night has envel- oped them and they are far removed from light. They neither understood nor set foot on the path of those who endeavour to obtain knowledge. They did not drink from Prophetic knowl- edge or divine mysteries. Instead, they ate from the refuse of a people who had gone astray before them, and threw the Book of Allah behind their backs and were content with the utter- ances of the treacherous. The secret of this religious doctrine was among the most delicate and difficult topics. So those with shallow views and deficient intellects did not compre- hend it and hastily adopted other ways. Thus, the prophecy of ]Muhammadsas] the Most Truthful-regarding فَيْجٍ أَعْوَجَ ]Faijin Awaja]-came to pass. ¹ In this is a sign for those who reflect. Then, Allah had mercy on me and revealed this secret by His grace and mercy and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. He elevates whosoever He desires, and He brings low whosoever He wishes. And He makes knowledge- able whosoever He desires. So, I learned through His teaching and I understood through His instruction, and I have been 1.
