REFUTING OBJECTIONS This is the heavenly spear that has been made not by the hands of man, but rather, has been bestowed by the hand of Allah the Gracious. It descended from the heavens and not from the works of the people on the earth. In conclusion, these are my beliefs- not how the dim-witted slanderer and vile calumniator has appre- hended, which in my view is a grave error. I censure those who make such declarations; indeed, one who says such things has erred and fallen into manifest misguidance. The truth, which has been shown to me by the One who is truth Himself and All-Wise, and disclosed to me by the Noble and All-Knowing, is that the spear of the Promised Messiah is heavenly, not earthly; and all his battles shall be waged by spiritual means, not physical weapons. He will slay his oppo- nents through spiritual gaze and determination; i. e. through the exposition of divine secrets and clinching of the argument, and not by the arrow, spear, or sword. For him is the Kingdom of Heaven, not the kingdom of the earth. As for those who await a messiah who will arrive with com- batants, charging forth like lions; who will slay every disbe- liever who does not believe; who will descend like a destructive lightning bolt from the sky, with no other occupation other than bloodshed; who will be eager to take life even if it should be of a swine; who even before completing his argument to those who deny him will take up a sharp sword—I am not from among them, and I do not recognize such a messiah. Moreover, I neither know nor apprehend the slightest trace of these fab- rications in the clear Book of Allah. I shall never accept this belief, for I am not among those who uphold beliefs due only to custom, like the blind. To summarize, these are not my beliefs; rather, they are from among the beliefs of Shaikh Batālawī, the proprietor of Ishāʻatus-Sunnah, who misleads the community. I am refer- ring to Muhammad Husain and those like him, who are the farmers of these crops [of misguidance]. In brief, this is one of 99
