REFUTING OBJECTIONS accept the truth, and they seek it out and do not tire. The one who seeks shall find, even if after some time. As for my 'transgressions, which this slanderer and liar has concocted in an effort to scare the British government, they constitute slander and insult and nothing more. My secrets are not sealed. The government is more knowledgeable than this slanderer, for it is a keen observer of the world. In its view, my family is the most well known in this region, and it knows its subjects extremely well. So, this slanderer's motive is not hid- den from it, nor is the underlying reason for his fear, nor the true intent underlying his agitation. Indeed, the government is very much aware of people like him, who wish to mislead the rulers through their vehement prejudice, outbursts of hostility, and rottenness of nature. Their minds contain nothing besides the poison of disorder, and their hearts are full of nothing but the stench of apostasy. They turned away from the Protector and His glory, and created mischief in the earth as trouble- makers. I have written repeatedly that I am a well-wisher and supporter of the government, and why should I not be when Allah has relieved our troubles through it and removed bit- terness in our lives by means of it. I was in a land of snakes but God annihilated every snake that was around me through this government. It has bestowed a great favour upon us, so we shall not forget its kindness, and we are indeed grateful. Then, there is what this slanderer has alleged about the concept of Jihad in Islam. He conjectures that the Quran cat- egorically calls for Jihad, without any conditions whatsoever! Is there any deception or lie greater than this—if only there were those who would reflect? Know that the Quran does not give the command to wage war against anyone except those who prevent the servants of Allah from believing in Him, joining His religion, obeying Him in all His commandments, 83
