The new officer was a young man originally from Tatar, who was a great scholar and a former Muslim who became an athe- ist after the Bolshevik revolution and rose through the ranks of the government. He began questioning me on different matters from different angles. Sometimes he would question me as if I were a Turkish spy. At other times, he would question me as if I were a member of the Bahai religion. I would tell him that I am a preacher from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, and then he began asking for our methods of publication, administration, and general management. He asked what the rights are of the Khalifah. Assuming I was a cunning political operator, he would ask me strange questions. In short, he would make assumptions about me and then seek statements from me. Some interrogations would begin in the early evening and last the entire night until the morning. He thoroughly went through all the questions about the Ahmadiyya Movement, including the names of its preachers, the names of its administrative lead- ers, details regarding the locations of our foreign missions along with the name of the missionary assigned to each, the size of our Community, list of our periodicals, circulation of our newspapers, a summary of those who hadn't yet converted, why they hadn't converted yet, etc. In short, he interrogated me very systemati- cally, asking for every imaginable detail.
