وقف right. اتَّقى : He was on his guard اتَّقى به : He took it or him as a shield for himself. تَقْوى and اِتِّقَاءٌ and تُقَى all mean guarding oneself against sin, trouble. Ubbayy ibn Kab explains تقوى by likening متقى to a man who walks on thorny bushes, taking every possible care that his clothes are not caught in and torn by the branches. An Arab poet Ibn-ul-Mutazz has expressed the same idea in the verse. خَلِ الذُّنُوْبَ صَغِيْرَهَا وَكَبِيرَهَا ذَاكَ التَّقَى وَاصْنَعْ كَمَاشٍ فَوْقَ اَرْضِ الشَّوْكِ يَحْذَرُ مَا يَرَى لا تَحْقِرَنَّ صَغِيْرَةً - إِنَّ الْجِبَالَ مِنَ الْحِصَى Avoid all sins both small and great that is تَقْوى And act like one who walks through a land full of thorny bushes, being cautious of all things that one sees. Do not think lightly of small sins, for even mountains are made up of tiny pebbles. وَقَاهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ : He (God) will save them from the punishment of blazing Fire )44:57(واق act. part. from مِنْ وَّلِيِّ وَ لا وَاقٍ وَقَى : Nor friend nor defender against Allah )13:38( وَلَكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَى : True righteous or truly righteous is he who fears (God) (2:190). وَاتَّقِيْنَ اللهَ : And you (women) fear Allah )33:56( أَفَمَنْ يَتَّقِي بِوَجْهِهِ : Is he, then who has only his own face to protect him with )39:25( وَاتَّقُوْا فِتْنَةً : And beware of affliction; guard yourself against )8:26( مَنْ يَّتَّقِ : Who is righteous )1291( اتَّقى : He was righteous; he was or became God-fearing اِتَّقى فلانًا : He feared and was on his guard against such a one and avoided him. اتَّقَيْنَا به : We shielded ourselves while facing an enemy by placing him in front of us. اَمَرَ ِبالتَّقْوى : Enjoins righteousness )96:13(. إِتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ : Fear Allah as He should be feared )3:103( مُتَّقِى )مُتَّقِينَ and مُتَّقُوْنَ plural, act. part. from : One who fears God; one guards himself against sins; one who takes God as his shield. تَقِيُّ is syn with إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا مُتَّقِيٌّ : If thou dost fear (Him( )19:19( أُولئِكَ هُمُ الْمُتَّقُوْنَ : They are truly righteous )2:178( هُدًى لِلْمُتَّقِينَ : Guidance for the righteous )2:2( اِتَّقى : Most righteous.
