قبض قبل thereof. قَبَسٌ is also explained as signifying a live coal or piece of fire )جَذْوَةٌ مِّنْ نَّارٍ( which one takes upon the end of a stick. اتِيْكُمْ مِّنْهَا بِقَبَسٍ : I bring you a firebrand therefrom )20:11(. قَبَضَ عَلَيْهِ بِيَدِهِ and قَبَضَ عَلَيْهِ and قَبَضَ الشَّيْءَ قَبْضٌ inf. noun يَقْبِضُ . aor] قَبَضَ and قَبَضَهُ بِيَدِهِ : He took the thing with his hand; he grasped it, gripped it, clutched it, laid hold upon it; he seized it with the whole of his hand or contracted his fingers upon it. قَبَضَ مِنْهُ الْمَتَاعَ : He took or received the goods from him. قَبَضَ قَبْضَةً : He took it or received it. قَبْضَةٌ : The measure of a man's fist from side to side; the measure of a man's fist with the thumb erect; a handful; an act of taking with the hand. قَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِّنْ أَثَرِ الرَّسُوْلِ : I took a handful from the footprints of the Messenger )2097( هذا قَبْضَةُ كَفِّيْ : This is the quantity that my hand grasps هَذِهِ الدَّارُ فِي قَبْضَتِي : This house is in my possession. وَالْاَرْضُ جَمِيعًا قَبْضَتُهُ : And the whole earth will be but His handful, meaning in His possession alone at His free and absolute disposal )3968( قَبَضَ اللهُ رُوْحَةُ : God took his soul. قَبَضَة : He contracted. قَبَضَ رِجْلَهُ وَبَسَطَهَا : He contracted his leg and extended it. قَبَضَ الطَّائِرُ جَنَاحَيْهِ : The bird collected or contracted its wings or it was quick in flight. وَيَقْبِضْنَ : And then contract them or draw them in )67:20( قَبَضَ يَدَةً عَنْهُ : He drew in his hand from it, refrained from laying hold upon it. يَقْبِضُوْنَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ : They drew in their hands or contract them i. e. refrain from spending or keep their hands closed )9:67( قَبَضْنَاهُ إِلَيْنَا قَبْضًا يَسِيرًا : We drew it in towards Us, an easy drawing in )25:47( قَبَضَ الْإِبِلَ : He drove the camels roughly or quickly . قَبَضَ وَجْهَهُ : He contracted or wrinkled his face. قَبَضَهُ : He straitened it; he made it scanty. وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ : And Allah straitens )2:246( قَبَضَهُ : It distressed him or grieved him. فَاطِمَةُ مِنِّي يَقْبِضُنِي مَا قَبَضَهَا : Fatima is a part of me what distresses her distresses me. قَبَضَهُ : It made him close-fisted. الْخَيْرُ يَقْبِضُهُ وَالشَّرُّ يَبْسُطُهُ : Wealth makes him close-fisted or niggardly and poverty makes him open-handed. مَقْبُوضَةٌ )pass. part. feminine( فَرِهَانٌ مَّقْبُوْضَةٌ : Then a security may be taken into possession (i. e. possessed) (2:284). 676
