خاف خاض plunged himself into dangers خَاضَ الشَّرَابَ : He mixed the wine and stirred it. خَوْضٌ is the confusing and confounding in an affair. خَائِضٌ )plural خَائِضُوْنَ and خَائِضِيْنَ act part. noun(. وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِيْنَ : And we indulged in vain discourse with those who indulged in it )74:46( مَخَاضٌ : Throes of child-birth; she-camels big with young. فَاَجَاءَ هَا الْمَخَاضُ : So the pains of child birth drove her (19:24). خَافَ aor. يَخَافُ inf. noun خَوْفٌ and خِيْفَةٌ and خَفْ مَخَافَةٌ is imperative; : He feared; he خِفْتُ )first per and خِفْتِ )second per was afraid or frightened or terrified. لِمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ الْآخِرَةِ : For him who fears the punishment of the Hereafter )11:104( وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ : And he who fears to stand before his Lord )55:47(. خَافَهُ and تَخَوَّفَهُ : He feared, or was afraid of him. خَافَة also means, he exceeded him in fear. خَافَ مِنْهُ : He feared from him or it. وَإِنِ امْرَأَةٌ خَافَتْ مِنْ بَعْلِهَا : And if a woman fears on the part of her husband )4: 129( خَافَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا : He feared for him a thing. خَافَهُ عَلَى مَالِهِ : He feared him or it for his property. فَإِذَا خِفْتِ عَلَيْهِ : And when thou fearest for him (288) is, according to some, used in the sense of ظَنَّ i. e. he thought or opined or knew. وَمَنْ خَافَ مِنْ مُّوْصٍ جَنَفًا : And who thinks or knows that there 6 is on the part of the testator an inclination to wrong (2:183). خَوَّفَهُ : He put fear into him; he frightened him; he made him to be in such a condition or state that men feared him; he made him to be feared by men. إِنَّمَا ذَلِكُمُ الشَّيْطَنُ يُخَوِّفُ أَوْلِيَاءَهُ Verily it is the Satan who makes you fear his friends; or who makes his friends fear i. e. he frightens them )3:176( يُخَوِّفُ اللَّهُ بِهِ عِبَادَهُ : Against which Allah warns His servants or by which He frightens them (39:17) (inf. noun وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا تَخْوِيفًا تَخْوِيْفٌ : And We send not Signs but to warn )17:60( تَخَوَّف besides being syn. with also means, he took little by little from it or from its sides or he took it from its extremities تَخَوَّفَنَا السَّنَةُ : The year or the drought took from us little by little. تَخَوَفِّنِي حَتَّى : He diminished to me little by little my right or due. أَوْ يَأْخُذَهُمْ عَلَى تَخَرُّفٍ : Or are they secure from) His destroying them to suffer loss little by little in their bodies and possessions etc. (16:48). 253
