originally ]ô á $ or is a derivative from ]ô á $. With Õ ø prefixed to it is a particle of comparison. Sometimes Ò ø ^ø á $ denotes denial. Ò ø ^ø á $ also denotes knowing and also thinking. ]ø á $ is sometimes contracted into ]ø á ». It is also syn. with Öø Ã ø Ø $ as in ]ô m» k ô ] Ö  % ç » Ñ ø ]ø Þ $ Ô ø iø  » jø  ô p » Öø ßø ^  ø n» ^ / : Come to the market, may be thou wilt buy for us something. æ ø Ú ø ^ mö  » Ã ô  ö Ò ö Ü » ]ø Þ $ ã ø ^ ]ô  ø ] q ø « ð ø l » ø mö © » Ú ô ßö ç » á ø : And what should make thee know, may be when it comes, they will not believe (6:110). ]ô á $ is a corroborative particle, corroborating the predicate; governing the subject in the accus. case and the predicate in the nom. case and it may generally be rendered as verily, certainly, surely and the like. ]ô á $ is sometimes contracted into ]ô á ». ]ô á $ ] Ö × # ä ø Æ ø Ë ö ç »  º  $ u ô n» Ü º : Verily, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful. It imports restriction of that which it precedes to that which follows it, giving the sense of "only". ]ô Þ $ Û ø ^ ] Ö  $  ø Î ø ^ l ö Öô ×» Ë ö Ï ø  ø ] ð ô : The alms are meant only for the poor (9:60).
