When applied to sight it means, dazzled or confused and dim. Its plural which is used about rational beings, is ì ø ^ ô òö ç » á ø and ì ø ^ ô òô n» à ø. Ê ø Ï ö ×» ßø ^ Öø ã ö Ü » Ò ö ç » Þö ç » ] Î ô ø ø é ÷ ì ø ^ ô òô n» à ø : We said to them, be ye apes despised (2:66). The word used with regard to animals is ì ø ^ ô òø è º. ì ø ô ø [aor. mø í » ø ö inf. noun ì ö » ø ] á º and ì ø ø ^ ø é º and ì ø ø ^ º and ì ö » º ] : He erred; went astray; he was or became lost; he perished; or he died; he suffered loss; he was deceived, cheated or beguiled; he experienced that he was a loser. ì ø ô ø Ê ô o » iô r ø ^ ø iô ä´ : He suffered a loss or he was deceived in his traffic or ì ø ô ø l » iô r ø ^ ø iö þ ³ ä ü. It is said that ì ø ô ø is never used otherwise than intransitively as in the above examples and in the Holy Qur'an also. Î ø » ì ø ô ø ] Ö $ ô m» à ø Î ø jø × ö ç » ] ]ø æ » Ö ^ ø â ö Ü » : Indeed losers are those who kill their children (6:141) etc. But ì ø ô ø Ú ø ^ Öø ä ü and ì ø ô ø Â ø Ï » × ø ä ü is also used transitively which means, he lost his intellect or he lost his property but in such cases preposition Ê ô o » is considered to be understood and the sentences are in reality ì ø ô ø Ê ô o » Ú ø ^ Öô ä´ and ì ø ô ø Ê ô o » Â ø Ï » × ô ä´ and similarly in the verse ]ø Ö $ ô m» à ø ì ø ô ö æ » ] ]ø Þ» Ë ö ø ã ö Ü » (6:13) and thus the verse is translated as "they who suffered with regard to themselves which is equal to they themselves suffered" and also in the verse ì ø ô ø ] Ö % Þ» nø ^ æ ø ] » F ì ô ø é ô which means, he suffered a loss with regard to this life and the Next (22:12). They who insist that ì ø ô ø is always used intransitively translate the verse ]ø Ö $ ô m» à ø ì ø ô ö æ » ] ]ø Þ» Ë ö ø ã ö Ü » as ]ø Ö $ ô m» à ø ì ø ô ö æ » ] æ ø ì ø ø ö æ » ] ]ø Þ» Ë ö ø ã ö Ü » i. e. those who suffered and caused their souls to suffer ( ì ø ø ö æ » ] being transitive) and say that for the sake of convenience and brevity the expression has been used as ]ø Ö $ ô m» à ø ì ø ô ö æ » ] ]ø Þ» Ë ö ø ã ö Ü » which is translated as those who ruin 229 ì ^ ì
