96 The commentary of al-Qa si dah relations with such a person who fell in the category specifically mentioned in the Holy Qur’ a n, and sexual relations with others was permitted in the case of marriage only. In S u rah an-Nis a ’ All a h says: And marry not those women whom your fathers married except that which has already passed, it is a thing foul and hateful and an evil way. Forbidden to you are your mothers and your daughters and your sisters and your father’s sisters and your mother’s sisters and brother’s daughters and sister’s daughters and your foster mothers that have given you suck, and your foster sisters and the mothers of your wives and your stepdaughters who are your wards by your wives whom you have gone in - but if you have not gone in unto them, there shall be no sin upon you - and the wives of your sons that are from your loins and it is forbidden to you to have two sisters together except what has already passed, surely All a h is Most Forgiving, Merciful. And forbidden to you are married women except such as your right hand possesses. This All a h has enjoined on you. And allowed to you are those beyond that, that you seek them by means of your property, marrying them properly and not committing fornication. ( an-Nis a ’ , 4:23–25 ) The Holy Qur’ a n prescribes a punishment for any man or woman who creates an unlawful relationship with the opposite sex.
