The commentary of al-Qa si dah 97 COUPLET 27 And you laid waste the drinking places; And you closed down the drinking of all the towns. The couplet mentions a great accomplishment of the Holy Prophet sa , which was actually a miracle. A drinking epidemic was prevalent amongst the Arabs and every one of them enjoyed talking about it. They used to boast about drinking and getting drunk. Their poetry was full of praise for drinking. A poet by the name Lab i d bin Rab i ‘ah, says in one of his couplets: \^ e"B "-2B" P" % /P. /9 /PG. * [ I was drinking in the morning even before the rooster awoke, not to hide my drinking from people but that I could take pride and boast to the people when I greeted them in the bar that morning, that they were drinking for the first time and I for the second.
