رهق رهب caution; Christian monks; ascetics or religious recluses. مِنْهُمْ قِسِّيْسِينَ وَ رُهْبَانًا : Of them are savants and monks )583( تَرَهْبَ : He became رَاهِبٌ i. e. one who devotes himself to religious practices. رَهْبَانِيَّةٌ : Monkery monasticism, asceticism; excess in religious exercise and discipline, or detachment from mankind; or it may be from رَهْبَانٌ signifying " excessively fearful" (as also رَهْبَانِيَّةٌ(. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said: لَا رَهْبَانِيَّةَ فِي الإسْلام : There is no asceticism in Islam. Again عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْجِهَادِ فِإِنَّهُ : The waging of war against evil is obligatory upon you for it is the asceticism of my people. وَرَهْبَانِيَّةَ نِ ابْتَدَعُوْهَا : And monasticism which they innovated (57:28). رَهْبَانِيَّةُ أُمَّتِي رَهَطَ aor. يَرْهَطُ inf. noun إِرْتَهَطَ الْقَوْمُ رَهْطُ : The people collected. رَهْطٌ : A man's people and tribe consisting of his nearer relations هُمْ رَهْطُهُ : They are his tribe and his people closely related. أَرَهْطِيْ اَعَزُّ عَلَيْكُمْ مِّنَ اللَّهِ : Is my tribe mightier with you than Allah )11:93(; A number of people less than ten among whom there is no woman. وَكَانَ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ تِسْعَةُ رَهْطٍ : And there were in the city a party of nine persons; a number from seven to ten; or from three to ten (27:49). The word also means, an enemy. رَهِقَ ]aor. يَرْهَقُ inf. noun رَهَقَ[ : He was or became stupid and frivolous; he did wrong and abominable things; he told a lie; he hastened to do a thing. رَهِقَهُ : It reached or overtook him or it; he followed him and was about to overtake him; it covered him or it. رَهِقَهُ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ : He did to him that which he disliked. رَهِقْتُ إِثْمًا : I committed a sin. رَهِقَهُ الدَّيْنُ : Debt covered him. وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ : And ignominy shall cover them )10:28( اَرْهَقَهُ : He compelled or urged him to do a thing which he had not the power to do. اَرْهَقَهُ ظُلْمًا : He made wrong to come upon him or overtake him or befall him. اَرْهَقَهُ طُغْيَانًا : He imposed upon him excessive disobedience, or he oppressed him with excessive disobedience, or caused him trouble through rebellion. فَخَشِيْنَا أَنْ يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَانًا وَكُفْرًا : And we feared lest he should cause them trouble through rebellion and disbelief, or he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief, or he should impose upon them 345
