حسر He was or became of good actions or nobility. أَحْسَابٌ) حَسَبٌ is plural): Measure, quantity; amount, value; honour, distinction; merits; noble pedigree. يُجْرَى الْمَرْءُ عَلَى حَسَبٍ عَمَلِهِ : Man will be paid according to the amount or quality of his work. حسد or حَسَدَهُ عَلَى الشَّيْءِ حَسْدٌ and حَسَدٌ inf. non يَحْسِدُ and يَحْسُدُ aor حَسَدَ حَسَدَهُ الشَّيْءَ : He envied him for the thing or he envied him the thing (wishing that he might be deprived of it. حَسَدَهُ عَلَى شَجَاعَتِهِ : He wished that he possessed courage like him (without wishing that he may be deprived of it). Thus حَسَدٌ i. e. envy is of two kinds Good or bad. The first kind of حَسَدٌ is that the possessor may become deprived of the thing he possesses and it may become transferred to him; the good حَسَدٌ consists in the حَاسِدٌ wishing that the good thing possessed by the مَحْسُودٌ might also be possessed by him, the possessor also retaining it. حَسَدَنِىَ اللَّهُ إِنْ كُنْتُ أَحْسَدُكَ : May God punish me for my envy if I envy thee. حَسَدٌ : Envy; or the wishing that a blessing, or a cause of happiness may depart from its possessor and become transferred to one self. حَسَدًا مِّنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِهِمْ : Out of envy from their ownselves (2:110). This is the predominant meaning of حَسَدٌ but حَسَدٌ as shown above is used in good sense also. حَاسِدٌ : Envier; one who envies (plural( حَسُوْدٌ حُسَّادٌ :Envious. مَحْسُوْدٌ : One who is envied. أَمْ يَحْسُدُوْنَ النَّاسَ : Do they envy men? )4:55( وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ : And from the evil of the envier when he envies (113:6). حَسَرَ ]aor. يَحْسُرُ and يَحْسِرُ inf. noun حَسْرًا and حُسُوْرًا[ and حَسِرَ ]aor يَحْسِرُ and يَحْسُرُ aor] حَسَرَ الْبَصَرُ . [ حَسْرَةً and حَسْرًا inf. noun يَحْسَرُ inf. noun حُسُوْرًا[ : The eye became fatigued and dim and dull. حَسَرَ الشَّيْءُ : The thing became manifest. حَسَرَ الْمَاءُ : The water sank and disappeared; or became low or retired حُسِرَتِ الدَّابَّةُ : The beast became tired or fatigued so that it was left to remain where it was. (inf. noun حَسَرَ حَسْرًا or اِسْتَحْسَرَ and حَسِرَ : He became tired, fatigued or jaded or he (the beast) fell down from fatigue. إِسْتَحْسَرَ : He was tired and felt weary ادْعُوا اللهَ وَ لا تَسْتَحْسِرُوْا : Pray to God and do not be weary or feel weary or 181
