ĀL-E-‘IMRĀN PT. 4 لَقَدْ سَمِعَ اللهُ قَوْلَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللهَ And surely Allah has heard. 182 the utterance of those who said, فَقِيرٌ وَنَحْنُ أَغْنِيَاءُ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَالُوا Allah is poor and we are rich“ وَقَتْلَهُمُ الْأَنْبِيَاءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٌّ وَنَقُولُ We shall record what they have ذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ said, and their attempts to kill the the Prophets unjustly; and We shall say, 'Taste ye punishment of burning. Primarily, signifies the transfer of property, etc. from one to another without sale or i. e. , I ورثت علما من فلان gift. The Arabs says gained or acquired knowledge from such a one (Mufradāt). Commentary: The chief obstacle in the way of the hypocrites to accept Islam was that constant calls were made on Muslims to spend money in the cause of God and make sacrifices for it. They are told in this verse that their unwillingness to spend would eventually do them no good nor would it save their possessions from 596 The sentence, And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth, obviously does not mean that Allah will receive heavens and earth in inheritance from someone else. The word rendered as "heritage" here signifies ownership. The word also means portion allotted to one, as in those who. . الذين يرثون الفردوس the verse shall inherit Paradise (23:12). Now, Paradise is not inherited by anyone; it is only received as an allotted portion from God. 464. Commentary: The words, Allah has heard the utterance of those, have been used by way of rebuke and warning, meaning that God is not unaware of these impudent utterances and that the utterers will certainly have to answer for them. The words, Allah is poor and we are rich, were uttered by the Jews on behalf of the hypocrites and as an expression of their thoughts when the latter were called upon to spend their wealth in the cause of Allah (3:181).
