GLOSSARY 719 Khatm-e-Nubūwwat Seal of Prophet- hood. Refers to the highest rank among Prophets, accorded to the Holy Prophet Muhammadsas. Khātamun-Nabiyyin The Seal of the Prophets. A title accorded by God to the Holy Prophet Muhammad sas in the Holy Quran. A variant is Khātamul-Anbiyā. Khātamul-Anbiya' A title accorded to the Holy Prophetsas meaning, 'the Seal of the Prophets. ' An alternate version of writing is Khatam-e-Anbiya'. Kos A kos is a measure of distance, the length of which is approximately two English miles. Kufr Disbelief. Describes any belief or act that is so contrary to Islamic teach- ings that it can cause its doer to fall outside the pale of Islam. Often used by Muslims in the context of opining on the beliefs or actions of their co-re- ligionists. La'nat Curse. Literally means 'Absence of exaltation. Lauh-e-Mahfüz Lit. 'the Preserved Tab- let. Malā'ikah Malaikah which is the plu- ral of Malak is derived from Malaka which means, he controlled, or from Alaka meaning, he sent. The angels are called Malā'ikah because they control the forces of nature or be- cause they bring Divine revelations to Heavenly Messengers and Reformers. Manqūlī Transmitted knowledge. Masih Messiah; a title for Jesus in Islam. Maulawi A Muslim religious cleric. Maʻqül Knowledge that is corroborated by science, reason, and rationality. Millat-e-Hanīfiyyah The monotheistic faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). Mu'jizah Miracle performed by a Prophet. Mufti An Islamic jurist who issues fatwas (legal opinions). Mi'raj The spiritual ascension of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsas to Heav- ens, described in the Holy Quran and related in detail in hadith literature. Muallim-ul-Malakūt Literally 'the In- structor of the Realm of Angels' used as a sarcastic title for Iblis Mubāhalah Prayer duel. As described in Surah Al-e-Imran, a contest be- tween claimants to divine support wherein each party prays for God to curse the lying party.
