AL-QAŞIDAH-AN ODE IN PRAISE OF THE HOLY PROPHET $as 579 كَانَ الْحِجَازُ مَغَازِلَ الْغِزْلَانِ فَجَعَلْتَهُمْ فَانِينَ فِي الرَّحْمَنِ The people of Hijaz were entangled in flirtation with doe-eyed beauties; You made them completely lost in the love of ar-Raḥmān [the Gracious]. شَيْئَانِ كَانَ الْقَوْمُ عُمْيًا فِيْهِمَا حَسْوُ الْعُقَارِ وَكَثْرَةُ النِّسْوَانِ Two things had made the nation blind: The zest for drinking and indulgence in women. أما النِّسَاءُ فَحُرِّمَتْ إِنْكَاحُهَا زَوْجًا لَّهُ التَّحْرِيمُ فِي الْقُرْآنِ As for women, marriage was forbidden To those who were sanctified in the Quran. وَجَعَلْتَ دَسْكَرَةَ الْمُدَامِ مُخَرَّبًا وَأَزَلْتَ حَانَتَهَا مِنَ الْبُلْدَانِ And you laid waste the drinking places, And you closed down the drinking of all the towns. گم شارب بالرَّشْفِ دَنا طَافِحًا فَجَعَلْتَهُ فِي الدِّينِ كَالنُّشْوَانِ Many were those who were intoxicated with drink after drink, But you made them drunk with the wine of the Faith. كَمْ مُحْدِرٍ مُسْتَنْطِقِ الْعِيْدَانِ قَدْ صَارَ مِنْكَ مُحَدَّثَ الرَّحْمَنِ How many were addicted to playing music, But you made them enjoy the bliss of converse with ar-Rahman [the Gracious]. كُمْ مُسْتَهَامِ لِلرَّشُوفِ تَعَشُّقا فَجَذَبْتَهُ جَذْبًا إِلَى الْفُرْقَانِ How many were the wanderers lost in love of fragrant beauties, But you drew them firmly toward the Furqan [i. e. the Holy Quran]. أَحْيَيْتَ أَمْوَاتَ الْقُرُوْنِ بِجَلْوَةٍ مَاذَا يُمَاتِلُكَ بِهَذَا الشّانِ You raised the dead of centuries with a single manifestation- Who can equal you in this majestic rank?
