Twelve from among the early ones remained steadfast, but one of these also renounced him later. Those who remained steadfast saw many Signs later and were counted among the truthful ones in the sight of Allah. I would like to say to you again that if you come and stay with me for forty days, I am sure that my company and nearness will impact you. Though I cannot hold out any promise, yet my heart testifies that something will certainly be manifested that will draw you towards certainty. I can see that something is about to happen, but, for now-in accordance with His eternal practice-God Almighty wills to bring into being two groups-first, those who are flocking to me on account of the blessing of virtuous thinking, and second, those who are drift- ing away from me as a consequence of the evil of suspicion. And I was sorry to read your statement that mere dialogue will not result in anything decisive. Out of mere love, kindness, and sympathy, I wish to bring to your attention that most of the matters of this world are indeed decided through dialogue, so much so that on the strength of mere verbal proof-or lack of proof-a court of law can, in all serenity, pass the death sen- tence against one person while acquitting another of murder. All legal cases are decided upon the proof or want of proof of facts; no party is asked to show a heavenly Sign before judge- ment is given in his favour, nor is a defendant asked to demon- strate a miracle before the case against him is dismissed. As a matter of fact, if a plaintiff, instead of proving his case, makes a serpent out of a needle or makes a pigeon out of a piece of paper and makes it fly in the air in the view of the court, no judge will give him a favourable decree merely on those grounds, unless the validity of the claim is proven and the facts are examined.
