LETTER TO NAWWAB MUHAMMAD ALI KHAN 405 interpolated Gospels into all the languages of the world and compiling books against Islam in every language, and distribut- ing them over the whole world, and some portray an unfavour- able picture of Islam in peoples' mind through theatrical plays. Tens of millions of rupees are spent in such endeavours. Some have formed an army which they call the Salvation Army; they go about in all countries. Similarly, there are many other ways whereby their men and their women have caused harm to tens of millions of people. The matter has now reached an extreme. It was necessary, therefore, that in this age, the spirit of the Messiah should have been moved and agitated and demanded the descent of a similitude having the closest affinity with itself. This is, therefore, a great Sign for recognizing the truth of my humble self, but only for those who understand. The Sufis of Islam are accustomed to seeking spiritual ben- efit from the tombs of the dead, and also believe that it so hap- pens sometimes that the spirituality of a deceased Prophet or saint is united with a living servant of God. They describe this phenomenon by saying that a particular saint has come in the footsteps of Moses or in the footsteps of Abraham. They also use the phrases 'of the disposition of Muhammad' or 'of the disposition of Abraham. They should certainly attend to this profound insight of spiritual knowledge. 3. THE THIRD SIGN of this humble one's truth is that some men of God gave news of this humble one's appearance many years before my advent, to the extent that they have mentioned my name, place of residence, and age in detail. I have already written this in [my book] Nishān-e-Asmānī [The Heavenly Sign]. 4. THE FOURTH SIGN of this humble one's truth is that I dispatched about 12,000 letters and public announcement notices to members of other faiths to call them to a spiritual contest based on the gift
