388 Α'ΙΝΑ-Ε-ΚΑMĀLĀT-E-ISLAM-DAFI UL-WASĀWIS For example, the Noble Companions believed in our Lord and Master, peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him, and none of them asked for a Sign or demanded any proof. And although Signs rained down at the proper time thereafter, and miracles were manifested, the Noble Companions were never in need of miracles to declare their faith. Had they made their faith dependent on seeing miracles, not even a grain of their distinction would have been established and they would have been counted among the common people, and would not have joined the ranks of those accepted as the beloved servants of God. Whoever demanded a Sign elicited the wrath of God Almighty. They did not truly enjoy a good end, and most of them died in a state of disbelief. In short, all Scriptures of God Almighty point out that ask- ing for a Sign never produced any blessings for a people and whoever demanded a Sign, that very individual faced destruc- tion. Similarly, in the Gospel [Jesus] the Messiah says: An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a Sign; and there shall no Sign be given to it. ¹ I have also written earlier that at this juncture the ques- tion naturally arises in the mind of every individual: 'How can a man differentiate between truth and falsehood without a Sign-if anyone is accepted as being from Allah without witnessing a Sign, there is a possibility of being deceived into acceptance?' The reply to this is precisely what I had previously written that God Almighty has declared the reward of faith to be conditional upon the declaration of faith prior to witness- ing a Sign, and to differentiate between truth and falsehood, it is sufficient to possess a few pointers that can form the basis to validate the claim, and the scale of attesting evidence should outweigh the scale alleging falsehood. 1.
