BATALĀWI'S STATEMENTS & THEIR RESPONSES 339 This is that verdict which God Almighty will deliver Himself; for, it is His promise that a believer will prevail in any case. As, He Himself says: لَنْ يَجْعَلَ اللهُ لِلْكَفِرِينَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ سَبِيلًا 10 Meaning: It can never be that the kāfir should find a way to overpower the believer. 3 Meaning that: O believers! If you become righteous, God Almighty will place a distinction between you and the others. What is that dis- tinction? It is that you will be granted a light which will not at all be found in the others—namely, the light of [Divine] revelation, the light of acceptance of prayer, and the light of miracles of the Chosen Ones. Now, obviously, how can he who has not even abandoned falsehood, be considered a righteous person in the eyes of God Almighty, and how can he perform any marvels? In short, this method will expose the hid- den reality of us both and people will see who enters the battlefield and who is proven to be true according to the verse لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَى ]for them is good news] and the hadith أَصْدَقُكُمْ حَدِيثًا ]Truest of you in his statements[. 4 There is another thing also with this by means of which the truth- ful ones can be tested, and which God Almighty Himself brings into existence. Namely, that sometimes a man is involved in such a calamity from which no way of escape or success can be seen by him except that he should tell a lie. It is at such a time that he is tested as to whether there is truth or falsehood in his nature, and whether at such a delicate time his tongue utters the word of truth or whether, fearing for his life, honour, and wealth, he starts uttering falsehood. 1.
