280 Α'ΙΝΑ-Ε-ΚΑMĀLĀT-E-ISLAM-DAFI UL-WASĀWIS that he also loves Islam, has concern for Muslims, and is also keen about the material welfare of the progeny of Muslims. It is utterly surprising why, despite all this, he would express senseless and unorthodox opin- ions against the authoritative dicta of the Noble Quran. The reason seems to be an inadvertent trial in which he has become ensnared. Namely, that before he could devote his thoughts to the teachings of the Noble Quran and attain complete awareness of its con- vincing arguments, he was attracted, at an inauspicious time, towards the books written in this age by European philosophers, who are very close to being atheists. Moreover, it appears that he has also been lis- tening to the ideas of the modern free thinkers who were entrapped by European science and philosophy. Consequently, he had to suffer the same fate which is the lot of those taking a one-sided view of a matter. Having been ignorant of the lofty verities of the Noble Quran, he was affected by the magic of the discourses of philosophers. Had he not been supported by the grace of God Almighty and the purity of his heart which is the outcome of that grace, no one can say where his wan- derings would have landed him by now. As a matter of fact, Sayyed Şāhib's honesty of purpose is praisewor- thy because he has not forsaken the Holy Quran, though inadvertently he has cast himself so far away from its purport, teaching, and guidance as to cause him to suggest interpretations of the Noble Quran which were neither within the knowledge of God and His Messenger, nor the Companions, nor Saints, Qutbs, Ghauths, or Abdāl¹ and in support of which there was no authority nor any indication in the text. Even more pitiable is that Sayyed Şahib, meaning to do a well-in- tentioned service, swept away the basic principles of Islam which are the essence of Divine wahy [revelation] or, in other words, which are Islam itself. In his commentary, he has given such interpretations of the explicit verses of the Noble Quran that are remote from the truth and 1. Qutbs, Ghauths, or Abdal are different ranks and honorary titles for the Saints in Islam. [Publisher]
